Our last concert: The Partridge String Quartet

Saturday, June 13 at 7.45 pm

The Partridge String Quartet’s performance on June 13th was truly superb, featuring four outstanding musicians: Jos Jonker (Violin); Madeleine Jevons (Violin); Eunice Cheng (Viola); and Daniel Smith (Cello).

The concert opened with Mozart’s String Quartet no 23, K. 590. All four players gave virtuosic performances, each player perfectly balancing and responding to the others. The obvious delight of the performers themselves contributed to the audience’s own enjoyment of their performance. This interaction between performers and audience is what makes live music so special, and one of the reasons why attending a concert in Yass Memorial Hall is a unique experience.

Having thrilled us with the Mozart String Quartet, the Partridge ensemble introduced us to an entirely different composition by young Australian composer, Holly Harrison. The piece was entitled “Fluor Electric” – and it was indeed electrifying. From the first rasping bars played close to the bridge by violinist, Jos Jonker, we were on the edge of our seats. A thrilling performance.

After the interval we were treated to Debussy’s String Quartet in G Minor, Op 10. This sensual and evocative piece was exquisitely performed. Malcolm and Heather Bullock, connoisseurs of this quartet, pronounced it the best rendition they had ever heard.

And as a final treat – an encore! Again, a change of genre. This time, variations on an Irish air, which brought thunderous applause.
